27 July
1885 - There
is an article in the NY Times dated 27 July 1885 that almost certainly refers
to this Ellen and her husband, John.
A widow's suit for damages. A suit for $20,000 damages has been
filed in the Supreme Court, Brooklyn by Mrs. Ellen C. Van Wickle,
widow of John L. Van Wickle against John Mangles who
keeps a saloon at Graham and Van Cott Avenues. The
plaintiff alleges that on Dec.23, 1884, her husband met his death through
liquor supplied by Mangles. The latter says he sold only one drink to Van Wickle from the effects of which he became intoxicated. The
widow says after giving her husband the liquor, Mangles placed him in a damp
room where he was exposed to cold. Death resulted on the same day from heart
disease brought on by the intoxication.

(Ruth
Harvey, via 23 Aug 2005 email, provided me with a transcript of the Van Wickel burials in Cypress Hills Cemetery. The list contains
26 names of Van Wickels and relatives beginning with
Richard Van Wickel (b. 1798) and his wife, Phoebe (b.
1805) and some of their children, grandchildren and other relatives. The list
includes name, address at time of death, funeral home, grave #, age at death,
cause of death, and date and place of death. Richard and Phoebe's son, John L.
and his wife, Ellen C. are buried here. Children of John L. and Ellen C. Van Wickel that are buried here include: Emma S., John L.,
Henry, Violeta, Florence (and her son, George Kieb),
Louis (and his wife Loretta). Children of Louis and Loretta Van Wickel that are buried here include Irene and Lillian.
There is also a Walter, Elizabeth, and John L. buried here who are presumably grandchildren
of John L. and Ellen C. Van Wickel--perhaps children
of their son, John L. If and when Richard and Phoebe Van Wickel
